These are the warmest US cities in the middle of winter, ranked by their average January temperature over 30 years. Rankings cover the 342 US cities with a population of 100,000 or more, using 1991 to 2020 climate normals.

Honolulu, HI tops the list at 71 °F against 8 °F for Fargo, ND at the other end. 9 of the top 10 cities are in Florida.

Analysis

Winter is where American climates split apart

Honolulu leads, and the rest of the top of the table is one coastline. Every leading mainland city sits in southeast Florida: Miami, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and their neighbors, all holding January averages in the upper sixties. The physics is ocean moderation. Water cools far more slowly than land, the warm Atlantic current running just offshore keeps the air over the coast mild, and by the time an Arctic front has crossed the whole continent it arrives in south Florida drained of its bite. January is also the heart of south Florida's dry season, so the warmth comes with sun.

The gradient inside Florida is worth reading closely. The Atlantic side cities of the Miami metro run a touch warmer than Cape Coral on the Gulf side, and the averages slip degree by degree as you move up the peninsula through West Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie. That warm offshore current hugs the east coast, which is why the southeast corner, not the geographic south, is the winter warmth champion of the mainland.

The other end of the table is the northern plains. Fargo and the Minnesota cities post January means in the single digits and teens, with no ocean, no mountain shield, and a straight corridor to Arctic air. The contrast carries this list's real lesson: January separates American cities nearly twice as sharply as July does. The spread between the warmest and coldest city here is around sixty degrees, while the July table's spread is barely more than thirty. If two cities look similar on paper, compare their winters first. Winter is where American climates actually diverge, and it is the reason this list reads like a snowbird itinerary.

The January average used here blends day and night temperatures across the whole month, from 1991 to 2020 normals. Temperatures on this site are anchored city by city to NOAA station normals through the correction program described on the data sources page, so the coastal gradients this list turns on reflect measured values, not model guesses.
